Which trailer wiring harness fits a Model Y?
Start with what is already fitted. A complete factory tow package, a replacement harness and an aftermarket towbar installation are different purchases. A towbar on the car does not, by itself, confirm that the electrical system has been installed and commissioned.
Tesla’s Australian tow-package specification lists a 7-pin flat Type 3 harness and Tow Mode software. If that complete system is working, an extra lighting harness is not a routine requirement. Diagnose a fault before replacing parts.
Check the plug on your own car and trailer, particularly with an imported vehicle or an aftermarket installation.
Juniper is not a 2024 refresh. Registration year alone is still an unreliable way to choose a harness.

The 2020–2024 Model Y service procedure distinguishes 16-pin and 9-pin internal connectors, different trailer electronics and software configuration. That is why a simple “pre-Juniper versus Juniper” sales label is not enough to establish an exact match.

| Your setup | What to establish first |
|---|---|
| Complete factory tow package | Whether the existing lights and Trailer Mode work; replace only the diagnosed faulty component. |
| Towbar fitted, electrics incomplete | Required harness, controller hardware and commissioning for that vehicle. |
| Imported car or overseas kit | Vehicle-side connector, trailer-side plug and circuit assignments for Australian use. |
| 2025-on refreshed Model Y | Actual build, connector and kit instructions; do not transfer an earlier car’s fitment claim. |
Plug-and-play versus DIY splice wiring
“Plug-and-play” describes a connection method. It does not automatically mean the correct module is included, software configuration is unnecessary or the kit is suitable for every Model Y.
Tesla’s towing instructions warn against directly splicing trailer wiring and require the designed electrical connections. Ask the installer to confirm the complete installation scope before comparing kit prices.
A documented vehicle-specific kit
- Identifies the vehicle connector and market.
- Explains hardware and commissioning requirements.
- Provides a circuit test and installation instructions.
A generic splice kit
- Does not establish the correct Tesla interface.
- May leave module or software requirements unresolved.
- Should not be treated as a substitute for the specified connections.
Our vehicle-specific trailer wiring harness listing is a place to check the available options. For Australian Model Y use, obtain an exact match before ordering: the public Tesla options currently specify EU 13-pin and US 7-pin, alongside a vehicle-specific enquiry option.
Why does a bike rack show a trailer light warning?
A dashboard warning does not prove an LED load problem. First establish whether the rack lights work and whether the fault follows the rack, an adapter or the vehicle connection.
- Check the connection: inspect the plug, adapter and earth for damage, moisture or loose contacts.
- Test each lamp: check indicators, stop lamps and rear lighting while stationary with a helper.
- Record the warning: photograph the icon and note when it appears, then have the lighting circuit tested if it persists.

Tesla distinguishes a yellow accessory-connection indication from a red faulty-lighting connection. Its manual identifies wiring faults or excessive electrical demand as possible causes of lost lighting. Follow the vehicle’s warning instructions rather than assuming every icon is the same fault.
Australian trailer plugs and compliance
The Australian Tesla package uses a 7-pin flat plug, but that is not a blanket statement that every Australian trailer must use that exact shape. The August 2026 VSB1, Chapter 7 provides for compliant 7-pin or 12-pin plugs for trailers within the stated mass category.
Connector shape, circuit mapping and working lights all matter. Calling a harness “7-pin” or fitting a decoder does not, by itself, demonstrate compliance with the applicable rules.

| Pin | Circuit | Specified colour |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Left indicator | Yellow |
| 2 | Reversing signal | Black |
| 3 | Earth return | White |
| 4 | Right indicator | Green |
| 5 | Service brakes, where fitted | Blue |
| 6 | Stop lamps | Red |
| 7 | Tail, clearance and side-marker lamps | Brown |
Use the moulded terminal numbers and connector documentation to identify pins; the view from the cable side differs from the mating face. Do not identify a repaired loom by wire colour alone.
Will a harness affect my Tesla warranty?
A no-cut installation does not guarantee warranty protection. Keep the kit instructions, invoice, connector photos and installer’s test record, and disclose modifications when arranging Tesla Service.
The ACCC explains that consumer guarantees exist alongside manufacturer warranties. Tesla’s service guidance notes that modifications can affect service procedures and warranty coverage. Avoid relying on a seller’s blanket “will not void warranty” claim.
Pre-purchase fitment checklist
Send the following details together so the proposed kit can be checked against the actual installation. A photo of the outside trailer socket is useful, but it does not identify every internal connector or module.
- Vehicle: Model Y variant, build month/year, VIN and original sales market.
- Current installation: factory tow package or aftermarket towbar; whether Trailer Mode is available.
- Connections: clear socket and trailer-plug photos; installer-confirmed vehicle-side connector where relevant.
- Use: trailer, caravan or illuminated bike rack; lighting and adapter details.
- Braking and power: electric brake requirements and any separate auxiliary supply.
- Written kit scope: harness, module, plug type, hardware revisions, commissioning and installation instructions.
Do not choose the BYD Shark 6 AU variant for a Tesla. Do not substitute the Tesla US 7-pin option simply because both listings say “7-pin”. The installer must confirm the appropriate Australian connection and circuit mapping.

Fitment enquiry
Vehicle-specific trailer wiring harness
Review the kit options, then provide your Australian Model Y details for confirmation. A published EU or US variant is not confirmation of an Australian match.
Confirm the exact kit, price and installation scope before ordering. This enquiry does not certify Tesla approval or ADR compliance.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Australian Model Y tow package include trailer wiring?
Yes. Tesla’s Australian tow-package listing includes a trailer harness with a 7-pin flat Type 3 connector and Tow Mode software. Check whether your car has that complete package or only an aftermarket towbar before buying another harness.
Which trailer wiring harness fits a Tesla Model Y in Australia?
The harness must match the vehicle-side connector, hardware revision, Australian trailer plug and tow-package configuration. A listing for Tesla EU 13-pin or US 7-pin does not confirm Australian fitment. Supply your build date, VIN and connector photos for a specific match.
Is the Juniper Model Y a 2024 or 2025 refresh?
The refreshed Model Y belongs to the 2025-on generation. Do not use a 2024-versus-2025 split as the only fitment test: Tesla’s earlier-generation service procedure already distinguishes different internal connectors and trailer electronics. Confirm the actual hardware on your car.
Does a Model Y trailer plug in Australia have to be 7-pin flat?
Tesla’s Australian tow package specifies a 7-pin flat Type 3 connector. VSB1 also provides for compliant 7-pin or 12-pin trailer plugs within its stated scope. Match the actual vehicle and trailer connections; the number of pins alone does not prove compatibility.
Why does my Model Y show a trailer light warning with a bike rack?
The warning alone does not identify the cause; inspect and test the rack lights, plug, adapter and earth connection first. Tesla distinguishes an accessory connection from a faulty lighting connection. Do not assume an LED load resistor or CAN module is the right repair without diagnosis.
Does a trailer lighting harness also control electric trailer brakes?
Not by itself: a lighting harness, brake controller and auxiliary-power circuit have different jobs. If your trailer uses electric brakes, confirm the controller, vehicle connection and brake output as a complete system. Do not confuse pin 5 service-brake output with pin 6 stop-lamp output.
Will a plug-and-play harness protect my Tesla warranty?
No harness label guarantees warranty coverage. Australian consumer guarantees are separate from the manufacturer’s warranty. Keep installation records and disclose modifications to Tesla Service; damage associated with an accessory or installation requires assessment under the applicable terms and facts.
Can I splice into the Model Y tail-light wiring?
Tesla’s owner’s manual instructs owners to use its designed electrical connections and warns against direct splicing of trailer wiring. Have a qualified installer identify the appropriate vehicle-specific connection and commissioning requirements rather than treating a generic splice kit as an equivalent solution.
