Brake Controller to Tow a Caravan

Tabla de contenido

Australian caravan towing · GWM Cannon · Updated 4 October 2026

Quick answer: You need a compatible brake controller when your caravan uses electric brakes, unless one is already fitted; mechanical over-run brakes work differently. In Australia, brakes are required above 750 kg GTM, but that does not automatically mean an electric controller. For a GWM Cannon, check the trailer brakes and existing tow setup first.

Before you buy a controller, find out how your caravan actually brakes. The weight rating tells you what braking equipment is required; the brake design tells you which controller, if any, can operate it.

This guide covers Australian towing requirements and the checks a Cannon owner should make before ordering. Australian plug conventions and weight thresholds should not be applied to UK or New Zealand towing without checking local requirements.

Do I need a brake controller to tow my caravan?

Start with the caravan’s handbook, vehicle plate and fitted brake hardware. If someone has already installed a controller in your ute, have it identified and tested rather than buying a second unit.

    Electric drum brakes

Use a compatible electric brake controller and a working brake-output circuit. Trailer lights alone do not prove either is present.

    Electric-over-hydraulic

Confirm support for the exact actuator. The controller signal and the actuator’s power supply have different jobs.

    Mechanical over-run

The coupling operates the brakes mechanically or hydraulically. A conventional electric controller does not operate this system.

A genuinely unbraked trailer has no electric brake system for a controller to drive. It still needs to stay within the vehicle’s unbraked towing limit and the trailer’s applicable requirements.

caravan electric drum brakes vs electric over hydraulic vs override brakes Australia

Australian trailer brake rules: 750 kg and 2,000 kg GTM

VSB 1, August 2026, section 8 describes national trailer construction guidance. Transport for NSW’s towing guidance covers equipment and on-road checks; confirm the requirements for the state or territory where you will tow.

    Common light-trailer braking thresholds
    GTM Braking equipment Controller decision
Up to 750 kg VSB 1 does not require brakes. Fitted brakes must meet the applicable requirements. Check any fitted brake system and the vehicle’s unbraked limit.
Over 750 to 2,000 kg Efficient service brakes; at least one axle can be braked. Approved over-run brakes are permitted. Electric brakes need compatible control; an over-run coupling does not need a conventional electric controller.
Over 2,000 kg Brakes on all wheels and automatic breakaway braking for at least 15 minutes. Confirm the approved brake design, driver operation and separate breakaway equipment.

Queensland’s towing guidance also covers loaded limits, roadworthiness and insurance considerations. Alternative compliance routes exist, including UN Regulation 13 under VSB 1; unusual or imported systems need their applicable standard checked.

GTM is not ATM: GTM is the trailer’s rated mass carried through its tyres when coupled. ATM includes the coupling load. Read the plate ratings and weigh the loaded combination; do not use an empty weight or a guessed ball weight to decide compliance.

A controller and breakaway system do different jobs: the controller operates service braking. Breakaway equipment applies the trailer brakes if the trailer separates. Check both where required, and resolve any brake fault before travelling.

Does a GWM Cannon already have a brake controller?

A towbar, trailer socket or dealer tow package does not establish that an electric brake controller is fitted. Check your actual build and accessories, then have an auto electrician test the controller, trigger and trailer output with your caravan connected.

Do not assume every Cannon or Cannon Alpha has the same factory wiring. Ask for VIN-specific advice and a quote covering the controller, any interface or harness, power and earth wiring, socket work, calibration and testing.

Check the towing rating for your exact Cannon

GWM’s current Australian Cannon brochure lists different ratings for different grades. Its 2023 Cannon-CC announcement gives a lower figure for that earlier model.

Official Australian rating examples, checked October 2026
Vehicle in the source Maximum braked towing What this tells you
2023 Cannon-CC announcement 3,000 kg A current range maximum does not update an earlier vehicle’s rating.
Current Cannon Premium, 2.0-litre 3,200 kg Brochure lists Premium single cab chassis and dual cab separately from 2.4-litre grades.
Current 2.4-litre Lux, Ultra/Vanta and XSR grades 3,500 kg Use the exact grade and body style in the brochure; check your own vehicle documents.

The table is a set of source examples, not a rating for every model year or Cannon Alpha. Also check GVM, GCM, axle limits, towball download, towbar and coupling ratings, and the caravan’s ATM and GTM.

Passengers, a canopy, tools and towball download all affect vehicle loading. Fitting a controller increases none of the vehicle or trailer limits.

Will my 7-pin trailer socket operate electric brakes?

It can, if the Australian socket has a correctly wired service-brake circuit connected to a suitable controller. A passive plug adaptor changes connections; it cannot create controller output.

Australian 7-pin wiring: pin 5 is the service-brake circuit, conventionally blue. Pin 3 is earth, conventionally white. These assignments come from VSB 1, section 7.2; they are not a Euro 13-pin pinout.

The standard 7-pin arrangement does not provide a separate dedicated auxiliary charging circuit. Caravan fridge supply, battery charging and breakaway charging need their specified wiring; do not repurpose the service-brake pin.

Have the installer check circuit function, connector type and loaded voltage drop against the actual wiring diagrams. Wire colour or working brake lights are not enough to confirm service-brake output.

Which brake controller should I choose?

For regular caravan towing with compatible electric brakes, a proportional controller is a sensible starting point. During triggered braking it adjusts output using sensed deceleration; a time-delay unit builds output using a programmed ramp.

Neither type fixes worn brakes, poor earthing or the wrong brake mode. Our proportional vs time-delay comparison explains the operating differences using a Shark 6 example; apply only the general comparison to your Cannon.

    • Brake compatibility: electric drum brakes or the exact electric-over-hydraulic actuator.
    • Output capacity: number of braked axles, magnets or actuators within the controller’s specification.
    • Vehicle connection: suitable supply, earth, stoplight trigger and brake-output wiring.
    • Driver access: a visible display and manual brake control reachable from the normal driving position.

    EVparts4x4 proportional electric brake controller

The current listing specifies 12 V negative-earth systems, compatible electric or electro-hydraulic brakes and one to four axles. It also lists trailer profiles, adjustable boost and manual brake operation.

Confirm the supplied manual and actuator compatibility before ordering. A universal controller specification does not establish a Cannon-specific plug-and-play installation.

    Check current price and fitment

    Before your first towing trip

Ask the installer to hand over a tested combination, not just a powered display. Follow the controller and caravan manufacturers’ setup instructions rather than an installation time or gain number copied from another vehicle.

    1. Identify: record the Cannon variant, VIN, tow package, caravan brake type and rated masses.
    2. Connect: verify protected power, earth, trigger, output and any required interface. Do not connect a brake trigger directly to CAN communication wires.
    3. Mount: secure the sensor and driver control as specified, clear of pedals, airbags and steering components.
    4. Configure: select brake mode, complete levelling or calibration, then set power and response using the supplied instructions.
    5. Test: check lamps, manual operation, pedal-triggered braking and breakaway operation where fitted. Complete the prescribed controlled driving test with the actual trailer.

Recheck braking balance when changing the trailer or its load, after brake maintenance, or after moving the sensor. A saved trailer profile recalls settings; it does not verify today’s load or brake condition.

Keep the installation details and test results. Ask the vehicle maker and insurer about your particular modification and policy; there is no universal promise that an aftermarket installation preserves every warranty or determines every insurance claim.

    Caravan brake controller FAQs

Do I need a brake controller for every caravan?

For electric trailer brakes, you need a compatible controller unless a suitable controller is already fitted. Mechanical over-run brakes operate through the coupling and do not need a conventional electric brake controller. Identify the caravan’s brake system before buying.

Does a trailer over 750 kg GTM always need an electric brake controller?

No. It needs an appropriate service braking system, but approved over-run brakes can be used up to 2,000 kg GTM under the VSB 1 guidance. The braking design and applicable state or territory requirements determine the equipment you need.

What changes above 2,000 kg GTM?

Under the VSB 1 guidance, brakes must act on all wheels and an automatic breakaway system must keep the brakes applied for at least 15 minutes after separation. Confirm the applicable standard for your trailer; a service brake controller does not replace breakaway equipment.

Does the GWM Cannon come with a brake controller?

Check the exact build, accessory package and any previous installation. A fitted towbar or working trailer lights do not prove that a controller is installed. Have the installer identify and test any existing system before ordering another unit.

Can I use the 7-pin flat socket for electric trailer brakes?

Yes, when it is correctly wired to a suitable controller. The Australian 7-pin arrangement assigns pin 5 to service brakes and pin 3 to earth. A socket adaptor cannot generate a missing brake-control output, and a Euro 13-pin connector uses a different pinout.

Will an electric brake controller work with hydraulic caravan brakes?

It depends on the hydraulic system. An electric-over-hydraulic actuator needs a controller explicitly compatible with that actuator. A mechanical hydraulic over-run coupling works differently and does not use a conventional electric brake controller.

Should I choose a proportional or time-delay controller?

For regular caravan towing, a compatible proportional controller is a sensible choice because it adjusts output using sensed deceleration during triggered braking. A time-delay unit uses a programmed ramp. Either needs correct installation, suitable settings and working trailer brakes.

Will a controller increase my Cannon’s towing capacity?

No. It does not change the vehicle, towbar, coupling, axle or trailer ratings. Use the limits for your exact vehicle and weigh the loaded combination; passengers, accessories and towball load also affect the available vehicle load capacity.
