Quick answer: GWM’s Australian brochure dated 16 October 2026 lists 3,200kg braked towing for the 2.0TD Premium and 3,500kg for the listed 2.4TD and PHEV variants. Unbraked towing is 750kg. Match your exact vehicle, then check loaded masses, towball load, axle limits and towing hardware before choosing a caravan or parts.
Already own a Cannon and choosing a caravan? The useful question is what your exact ute can tow with the family, fuel and touring equipment aboard. A maximum trailer rating and a maximum payload are separate limits.
This guide uses the Australian Cannon brochure edition dated 16 October 2026. It does not transfer those ratings to every older build, a Cannon Alpha or a different-market vehicle.
GWM Cannon towing capacity by Australian variant
The current GWM specification table, printed pages 38–39, separates the 2.0TD Premium from the 2.4TD and Hi4-T PHEV variants. Match the powertrain, cab and build documentation before using a row.
All figures below are kg. On a phone, swipe the table sideways. Unbraked towing is 750kg for every column in this brochure.
| Variant | Powertrain | Braked trailer | Max towball | GVM | GCM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium single cab chassis | 2.0TD 4x2 | 3,200 | 320 | 3,050 | 5,590 |
| Premium dual cab | 2.0TD 4x4 | 3,200 | 320 | 3,135 | 5,830 |
| Lux dual cab / Lux dual cab chassis | 2.4TD 4x4 | 3,500 | 350 | 3,225 | 6,200 |
| Ultra / Vanta dual cab | 2.4TD 4x4 | 3,500 | 350 | 3,225 | 6,200 |
| XSR dual cab | 2.4TD 4x4 | 3,500 | 350 | 3,205 | 6,300 |
| Lux / Ultra dual cab PHEV | 2.0T Hi4-T 4x4 | 3,500 | 350 | 3,420 | 6,400 |
Use your vehicle’s handbook, labels and any valid approval documents to confirm the applicable limits. GWM’s brochure also makes towing subject to the vehicle, towbar, equipment and regulatory conditions; a catalogue figure is not clearance for a loaded combination.
Earlier Cannon or Cannon Alpha? Obtain that vehicle’s own figures. The current brochure is not retrospective proof of an older ute’s towing rating, and the standard Cannon PHEV row is not an Alpha specification.
GVM, GCM and towball weight: count each mass once
Use actual trip-ready masses alongside the ratings. A trailer’s plated ATM is a maximum; its actual loaded total must be measured, rather than assumed to equal that plate.
Transport WA’s mass definitions distinguish the whole trailer’s mass from the load supported by its axles. Towball load is supported by the towing vehicle, while the coupled trailer’s wheels support the remaining portion.
Vehicle check
Compare the coupled ute’s actual axle-weight total with GVM. That measured total already includes the load transferred through the hitch.
Combination check
Add the coupled ute’s axle weights and the trailer axle weights, then compare the result with GCM. Check each axle limit separately.
Do not add towball load again. Adding the whole loaded trailer to an already-coupled vehicle mass counts the hitch-supported portion twice. Keep coupled axle readings and uncoupled whole-vehicle readings clearly labelled.

A second consistent bookkeeping method is the ready-to-tow ute’s uncoupled mass plus the whole loaded trailer’s mass. The two methods should describe the same load state; use a competent weighing service to establish reliable readings.
What to measure before buying a caravan
- Load for the trip. Include passengers, fuel, water, luggage, fitted accessories and gear in the tub or on the roof.
- Record the coupled axle readings. Obtain the ute’s front and rear axle loads and the trailer axle-group load in the actual towing configuration.
- Record the trailer and ball masses. Have its whole loaded mass and applicable towball download measured using a suitable procedure.
- Collect every limit. Check the vehicle, trailer plate, axles, tyres, towbar, coupling and towball. Apply the relevant lower equipment limit where required.
- Keep the weighing report. Repeat the assessment after changing the load, trailer or major accessories.
The WA Safe Towing Guide explains the separate vehicle, trailer, hitch and axle checks. Avoid substituting a brochure kerb mass for the mass of your equipped touring ute.
Towing weight calculator and worked example
Use kg throughout. The calculator compares four entered limits using your actual measurements; it does not check trailer-plate, axle, tyre, brake, installation or road-rule compliance.
Use the formulas and example below with your own weighing report. Keep the coupled vehicle reading separate from the whole trailer reading.
Worked example: a 3,000kg loaded caravan
These are illustrative readings and limits, not a weighbridge certificate for a particular Cannon. The example assumes the same vehicle, trailer and load state throughout.
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| Coupled ute axle-weight total | 2,900kg |
| Coupled trailer axle-group mass | 2,700kg |
| Whole loaded trailer / towball download | 3,000kg / 300kg |
| Entered GVM / GCM limits | 3,225kg / 6,200kg |
| Entered braked / towball limits | 3,500kg / 350kg |
| Actual combination mass | 2,900 + 2,700 = 5,600kg |
| Remaining GVM / GCM margin | 325kg / 600kg |
In this example, 2,900 + 3,000 would overcount the 300kg already transferred to the ute. The alternative uncoupled calculation is 2,600 + 3,000 = 5,600kg.
Positive margins do not approve the combination. Axle loads, the trailer’s own limits, tyres, hardware, brakes and operating conditions still need checking.
Choose the towing equipment after checking the masses
Buying a stronger-looking hitch does not increase the Cannon’s approved towing capacity. Confirm the towbar and coupling ratings, the trailer brake type and the actual electrical connection before ordering parts.
NSW’s towing guidance requires suitably rated equipment and working trailer systems. Its brake categories are based on GTM: up to 750kg, 751–2,000kg and 2,001–4,500kg, with different requirements. These are NSW examples, not a complete national rule summary.
Trailer lighting wiring
Runs the required lamp circuits. It does not replace a service-brake controller. Match the actual plug standard, circuit functions and vehicle connection.
Electric brake controller
Relevant when the trailer uses compatible electric brakes, or a specifically supported electro-hydraulic system. A weight threshold alone does not identify which controller to buy.
For terminal identification, see our Australian 7-pin flat plug guide. A 7-pin European round, US connector and Australian flat plug are different configurations even when a listing uses the same pin count.
Our Cannon caravan brake-controller guide explains the distinction between electric and mechanical over-run brakes, and what to check before ordering.
Primary enquiry: a compatible electric brake controller
Our Cannon towbar and wiring range is a secondary enquiry option. Its current wiring labels include European and American standards; do not treat them as confirmation of an Australian 7-pin flat setup. Send VIN, build, brake type and connector photos before selecting a configuration.
The new Cannon brochure also warns that not every accessory carries over to PHEV models. A broad model-year label is not enough to approve the same towbar or loom for a newer PHEV, an XSR or a Cannon Alpha.
Accessories use the same vehicle load budget
Count the installed mass of the towbar, canopy, drawers, roof platform, batteries and other fitted gear before adding passengers and trip cargo. A product’s shipping weight is not a verified installed-system weight.
Our Cannon roof-load guide covers that separate mounting and loading question. Confirm roof allowance independently from payload and tow rating.
Transport WA’s upgrade guidance distinguishes GVM and GCM re-rating. Do not assume a suspension change or increased carrying allowance automatically increases the other limits.
Before you buy and before you tow
- Match the exact Cannon model, build and powertrain to its documents.
- Weigh the loaded combination and compare every applicable limit.
- Confirm the towbar, coupling, connector and brake system as separate components.
- Test required lights and brakes using the component instructions.
- Check mirrors, tyres, restraints and the requirements for every jurisdiction on the trip.
- Ask GWM about towing-related service and warranty conditions for your vehicle.
Browse the GWM Cannon parts collection for an identified requirement, or send a fitment enquiry. Include your location, VIN, trailer details and the measurements that affect the decision.
GWM Cannon towing capacity FAQs
Is the GWM Cannon towing capacity 3,200kg or 3,500kg?
Both appear in the Australian brochure dated 16 October 2026: 3,200kg for the listed 2.0TD Premium variants and 3,500kg for the listed 2.4TD and Hi4-T PHEV variants. Confirm the rating for your exact build; do not apply the current table to every earlier Cannon.
What are the Cannon PHEV GVM and GCM figures?
The same brochure lists the standard Cannon Lux and Ultra dual-cab PHEVs at 3,420kg GVM and 6,400kg GCM, with 350kg maximum downball load and 750kg unbraked towing. These are not Cannon Alpha specifications.
Can I use maximum payload and maximum trailer weight together?
Do not assume both maxima are available simultaneously. Check the actual coupled vehicle axle-weight total against GVM and add the trailer axle weights for the GCM check. The relevant axle and towing-equipment limits must also be met.
Does towball weight count towards the Cannon’s payload?
Yes. The hitch-supported load increases the mass carried by the vehicle. A coupled axle-weight total already includes that transfer, so do not add it to that vehicle reading a second time.
Should I add whole trailer mass to the coupled ute’s weight for GCM?
That double-counts the trailer load already carried through the hitch. Use coupled vehicle axle weights plus trailer axle weights, or a consistent uncoupled vehicle mass plus the whole trailer mass. Keep the weighing conditions the same.
Does a braked trailer always need an electric brake controller?
The required brake system and the need for a controller depend on the actual trailer brakes and applicable rules. Compatible electric brakes need the correct control arrangement; do not infer the brake technology from the trailer’s weight alone.
Will a suspension upgrade or heavier towbar raise the towing limit?
An accessory does not establish an approved increase. Check the vehicle and equipment ratings and any valid modification approvals. GVM, GCM and braked towing capacity are separate limits.
Does a European 7-pin wiring kit fit an Australian 7-pin flat trailer?
Do not assume so. Connector shape, standard and circuit functions must be matched. Ask for the exact vehicle-side connection and Australian trailer configuration rather than choosing by pin count.
Does this guide cover the GWM Cannon Alpha?
No. It uses the standard Australian Cannon range brochure. Obtain Alpha-specific vehicle and accessory documentation rather than transferring the table or a Cannon part listing.
Does the calculator confirm that my caravan is safe to tow?
No. It compares four entered mass limits and relies on correct measurements. It does not check trailer-plate ratings, individual axles, tyres, brakes, hardware, fitment or jurisdiction-specific rules.
