Roof Rack LED Lights in Australia

Tabla de contenido

    Reviewed 22 October 2026 · Australian light-vehicle buying checks · EVparts4x4 Editorial Team

Quick answer: Roof-rack LED lights can be legal in Australia, but the lamp type, mounting, wiring and use must meet the applicable requirements. Identify whether you need driving lights, work lights or daytime running lights, then check your state’s guidance. A platform supplied with LEDs is not automatically an approved driving-light package.

Buying a roof platform because it includes LED lights? First decide whether you need extra high-beam reach or light for a stationary task. A rack can fit your ute while its lamps do not suit the job.

Before comparing products, record your state or territory, vehicle year and roof mounting arrangement. Ask for the actual lamp models and their intended function. This guide uses NSW, WA and SA examples; check other destinations separately.

Driving lights or campsite lights: which do you need?

    I want better country-road visibility

Choose a documented driving-lamp setup, with suitable mounting and controls. Ask for evidence covering the actual lamps supplied, not just the platform or its mounting brackets.

I want light around camp or the load area

Define the task, direction and operating conditions first. Calling a lamp a work light does not remove installation restrictions; roof-mounted, forward-facing units need particular care.

Comparing a pickup roof platform with LEDs? Check the vehicle-specific option, package contents and current price, then request mounting and lamp details for your proposed use.

Check vehicle fitment & view LED platform options

The Vehicle-Specific option starts a fitment enquiry; it is not confirmation that a particular lamp is approved for road use.

roof mounted light bar driver eye level

NSW VSI.64 distinguishes driving lamps from other lamp functions. Driving lamps supplement high beam. A lighting product’s LED technology or appearance does not decide which rules apply.

Do not treat a switch label as approval. “Work light”, “off-road” or “LED included” is not enough to establish that the installed lamp can legally perform your intended function.

What the state guidance actually says

Read the full guidance for your location and have the proposed installation checked before buying. The examples below show why one national yes/no answer can hide the important conditions.

NSW: roof mounting is not a blanket endorsement

NSW VSI.64, driving-lamp section, does not prohibit roof or roll-bar locations, but discourages elevated driving lamps because of glare risks. It requires suitable positioning, white light and no more than four additional driving lamps.

The lamps must be capable of being disabled while high beam is on and turn off automatically when high beam is switched off. Roof space alone does not establish that a particular unit or installation complies.

WA: work-light classification can change the answer

WA Information Bulletin IB-132D requires additional driving lights to stay off without high beam and switch off when the headlamps are dipped. Its mounting conditions also address driver view, glare and secure installation.

The bulletin’s search/work-light section prohibits forward-facing LED light bars used as work lights unless installed below the driver’s eyes. It also specifies an illuminated, labelled tell-tale switch. Renaming a roof bar as a campsite light does not resolve those conditions.

SA: driving lights and DRLs are different categories

SA’s driving-light guidance allows roof-mounted driving lights subject to its conditions, including avoiding increased driver glare and operation with main beam. The same page prohibits roof mounting for aftermarket daytime running lights.

Do not extend the driving-light provision to a lamp sold as a DRL, or treat either category as interchangeable with work lighting. Check the rules for other states and territories separately when planning a trip.

Five things to confirm before ordering a roof rack with LEDs

The useful shopping question is not simply whether the lights turn on. Ask what the supplied lamps are, what evidence covers them and whether the intended mounting and control arrangement is suitable.

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to read all columns.

Turn a vague listing into a checkable installation proposal
Check Ask for Why it changes the purchase
Actual lamp Manufacturer, model, markings and intended function for each supplied lighting unit A platform name does not identify its lamps
Road-use evidence Documentation for the applicable lamp requirements and the proposed jurisdiction A lumen figure or water-resistance claim is not road-use evidence
Mounting position Photos or a drawing showing height, direction, brackets and the driver’s sight line A lamp that fits physically may still be unsuitable for the proposed position
Controls and power Vehicle-compatible harness, control plan, protection and installation scope A generic switch or loose wiring kit does not establish the required behaviour
Complete quote Rack, mounting kit, any lamp changes, harness, labour and destination costs Compare the cost of a usable setup, not the rack-only starting price

A rack with several lighting units also needs its lamp arrangement assessed. Do not assume the whole rack counts as one lamp, or that all included LEDs share the same documented function.

NSW’s LED-lamp section advises checking the manufacturer’s road-use and ADR-compliance information before purchase. Ask for the actual document and model identification rather than relying on an unexplained “approved” badge.

Avoid buying a setup that creates bonnet glare

The NSW guidance highlights reflected light from the bonnet and other surfaces, while WA’s bulletin also addresses light causing driver discomfort. More output is not a benefit if reflections reduce the view ahead.

    1. Show the real vehicle. Supply model year, exact variant, existing rack or rails, roof photos and the proposed lamp location.
    2. Agree on the function. State whether the installation is for additional high-beam driving, a stationary task or another documented use.
    3. Confirm the control behaviour. Have the installer explain how the lamps are enabled, isolated and prevented from operating in the wrong conditions.
    4. Include a finished check. Ask for aiming, reflections, secure mounting, cable protection and function testing to be included in the quote.

roof mounted light bar bonnet glare night test

Use a vehicle-compatible electrical interface and the supplied installation instructions. This guide does not identify a universal Cannon high-beam wire, connector pin or fuse size.

For a GWM Cannon, our light-bar fitment guide covers the separate lamp-size and mounting decision. Its measurements and vehicle checks do not replace the lighting rules for your installation.

Considering our roof platform with integrated lights?

The EVparts4x4 pickup roof platform is an option to assess if you also need roof-carrying space. The product lists integrated LEDs and wiring, but does not identify lamp-specific evidence establishing a road-driving installation. Assess the platform and lamps separately.

    Roof platform with integrated LEDs

Open the Vehicle-Specific option and compare the package and price. Have the mounting kit confirmed for your roof, then ask for the supplied lamps’ identification and available documents.

Check platform fitment, contents & price

Send roof photos and ask about lamp details.

Separate the listed package from the checks still needed
Part of the purchase Listing information Confirm before ordering
Platform and mounts Aluminium platform and mounting hardware. Exact vehicle, roof attachment, selected size and supplied fitting kit.
Integrated lighting LED lighting with wiring is listed. Lamp models, intended function, available road-use evidence and separate control requirements.
Installation Rack fitting instructions are listed. Whether the quote includes the complete electrical installation and finished testing.
Price The selected option has its own product-page price. Delivery, installer labour, extra harness parts and any changes to the proposed lamps.

If you need documented road-driving lamps and the included units cannot be confirmed for that purpose, agree on a different, verified lighting arrangement before paying. Confirm whether any proposed changes are compatible with the platform and covered by the supply and installation terms.

Cannon owners should also read our roof rack weight-limit and rooftop-tent guide. Mounting and roof-load suitability are separate checks; lighting approval cannot establish either of them.

Browse the GWM Cannon accessories collection after identifying the required setup. A tub sports bar or a different vehicle’s roof rack should not be substituted without a specific fitment check.

    Roof-rack LED lighting FAQs

Are roof-rack LED lights legal in Australia?

There is no automatic approval from the roof-rack description. Check the actual lamp category, compliance evidence, installation and local requirements. The NSW, WA and SA examples in this guide have conditions; they do not approve every roof-mounted light.

Can I wire driving lights to a dashboard switch alone?

For the NSW setup here, driving lamps need high-beam interlocking and separate disablement. Have a vehicle-compatible circuit specified; a stand-alone dashboard switch does not establish those functions.

Are the LEDs included with this platform a confirmed road-legal package?

No lamp-specific evidence establishing that package is provided by this guide. Request identification and documentation for the supplied units and an installation assessment before ordering for road-driving use.

Can I call a roof light bar a work light to avoid driving-light requirements?

The name does not settle its classification or fitment. WA’s IB-132D specifically restricts forward-facing LED light bars used as work lights to positions below the driver’s eyes. Have the intended function and position checked rather than changing the label.

Can roof-rack LEDs be used as daytime running lights?

Do not assume so. SA’s guidance distinguishes driving lamps from aftermarket DRLs and prohibits roof mounting for the latter. Other jurisdictions and the actual lamp design need their own checks.

Does switching a lamp off or fitting a cover make it legal?

An off switch or cover does not establish compliant installation. Have the lamp type, position and controls checked; fitment and use are separate questions. Do not treat covering an unsuitable lamp as proof that the installation is permitted.

How do I avoid bonnet glare from roof-mounted lights?

Have the position, aiming and reflections checked on the real vehicle. A higher lamp position or larger lumen number does not establish a better result.

What should I send before buying a roof rack with integrated LEDs?

Provide model year, exact vehicle and variant, roof mounting photos, state or territory and the intended lighting task. Request the actual lamp model, available compliance documents, mounting instructions and an itemised installation quote.

Does a roof rack with several LED units count as one driving light?

Do not count the whole rack as one lamp. WA’s bulletin treats a light bar as one driving light when all its LEDs operate together; independently controlled sections count separately. Ask the installer to assess the actual lamp units and control arrangement.

Does no-drill rack installation mean the lights are plug-and-play?

No-drill describes the mechanical mounting. It does not establish the lighting circuit, high-beam control, weather sealing or compliance. Confirm what wiring and installation are included for your exact vehicle before ordering.
