Where Factory EV Lighting Falls Short in Australia
"Legally compliant" and "ideal for every road" aren't the same thing. The Australian Design Rules (ADRs) set a sound minimum standard for illumination, but they can't account for a 150-metre-dark stretch of unlit highway or a dusty gravel back road. Your factory low beam is tuned to light the road ahead safely without dazzling oncoming traffic — which is exactly right in town, but can feel short on a black country road.
EVs add two wrinkles. They approach almost silently, so other road users rely more on seeing you, and lower-slung models like the MG4 or BYD Dolphin can sit visually low among a sea of big utes and SUVs. Sensible, legal upgrades close that gap — the key word being legal.
Tail Light Guards: Stone Protection for Gravel Roads
If you regularly drive unsealed roads, a flung stone cracking a tail light lens is a real risk. A replacement OEM tail light assembly can run well into the hundreds of dollars before labour, so a guard that costs a fraction of that is smart, cheap insurance.
Tail light guards are typically tough ABS or steel mesh that clip or bolt over the existing light to deflect stones and absorb knocks. The one rule that matters for legality: a guard must protect the lens without dimming, tinting or obscuring the light's output or colour. Buy guards made specifically for your model so they fit the light shape precisely and clear any reversing camera or sensors — a Tank 300 guard won't fit an Atto 3.
Protect the light — don't dim it
A guard or cover that reduces how bright or clear your tail and brake lights appear is illegal and unsafe. Choose an open-mesh or slim-frame guard designed to shield the lens without cutting output.
Auxiliary Driving Lights: The Legal Way to See Further
If your real goal is to light up more of an unlit road, the answer isn't to tamper with your headlights — it's to add proper auxiliary driving lights (spotlights or an LED light bar). Done right, this is the genuine, legal forward-vision upgrade for outback and rural driving.
The rules are specific and worth following to the letter. Per state light-vehicle standards and the ADRs, additional forward driving lights must be white, face forward, and be fitted symmetrically. Demon Eyes and Halo Rings: Cosmetic, So Know the Rules
"Demon eyes" (a coloured glow in the projector) and "halo rings" are styling modifications, not vision upgrades. They change how your car looks; they do not meaningfully help you see the road, so treat them as aesthetics rather than safety.
Because they sit inside the headlamp, legality is the main concern. Any light visible from the front of the car must be white or amber — never red or blue, which are reserved for emergency vehicles — and must not flash or dazzle.
Even a compliant colour can draw a roadworthy inspector's attention, and a poorly wired kit that faults can complicate a warranty claim. If you fit them, use a plug-and-play kit or a professional installer, keep the colour legal, and know it's a look, not a safety feature.
Rear and Brake Light Upgrades: Compliant, Not Just Brighter
Good rear lighting matters — you want following drivers to read your brake and indicator signals instantly, especially in rain or low sun. Modern LED units help here because they light up faster than old halogen bulbs and last far longer. But "brighter" is not the goal, and it is not automatically legal.
Under the ADRs, tail and brake lights must be red, brake lights must be noticeably brighter than tail lights, and indicators must be amber flashing at one to two flashes per second. An aftermarket unit that alters the colour, pattern or intensity outside those limits can dazzle the driver behind you and fail a roadworthy.

Check the Ingress Protection (IP) rating: at least IP65 for dust and water spray, and IP67 for coastal use or anything that might see a water crossing. Corrosion, Vibration and Heat
In coastal Australia, salt air oxidises copper contacts, so a smear of dielectric grease on every plug and connector is cheap insurance against electrical gremlins.
