MG4 Need a Type 2 Dust Cap

Table of Contents

    Updated 21 October 2026 · Australian MG4 buying guide

Quick answer: An extra Type 2 dust cap is optional for an MG4. Check your factory covers and inlet condition first. Consider one for a clear between-session protection need, provided it fits and the charging door closes normally. An AC inlet cap is different from a cable-end cap or a rain shield used during charging.

If you have opened your MG4 charging flap and wondered whether the upper socket needs another cover, start with what is already fitted. An exposed-looking AC section does not by itself establish that a part is missing.

This guide helps you decide whether to buy an extra cap. For interface selection, dimensions and fitting steps, use our MG4 charging port cover fitment guide.

Does the MG4 already have a charging port cover?

The MG Australia MG4 EV handbook, charging-port section, describes the outer door and plug cover, distinguishes Type 2 AC from combined CCS charging, and identifies a lower cover removed for rapid charging.

That is a reason to check the original arrangement before buying. It does not establish that every MG4 needs an additional upper AC cap. Do not discard an original cover or treat an accessory as its approved replacement.

Missing part or optional extra? If an original cap, tether, hinge or outer flap is damaged, identify the required replacement with MG. If everything works and you simply want extra coverage between sessions, assess an accessory on its own merits.

Ask a dealer to compare your car with its build specification if you suspect a missing part. A generic product photo is not evidence of how your particular vehicle left the factory.

MG Australia lists separate MG4 EV and MG4 EV Urban handbooks on its owner’s manuals page. Its Urban brochure specifies CCS Type 2, but an interface name does not confirm aftermarket cap clearance.

MG4 Type 2 socket lower DC cap

Which kind of “Type 2 dust cap” are you looking for?

The same search phrase can lead to several different products. Decide where the part will sit and when you intend to use it. That choice matters more than whether the seller includes “MG4” in the title.

Four different needs hidden behind the word “cover”
Part Intended location or use Buying implication
Extra AC inlet cap Vehicle socket, between charging sessions Consider for an identified protection need; remove before connecting the charger.
Cable-end storage cap Disconnected charging-cable connector Choose for that connector and cable storage arrangement.
Original flap or lower DC cap Existing vehicle equipment Identify the correct replacement if damaged or missing.
Connected-cable rain shield A separate accessory intended around a connected cable Requires its own operating instructions; the inlet cap discussed here is not one.

If your concern is a loose cable rolling around the boot, begin with organised storage. An inlet cap on the car does nothing for a disconnected cable connector. Keep the supplied cable protection and follow the cable maker’s storage instructions.

If your concern is rain during charging, do not buy a solid inlet cap expecting it to cover a connected plug. First follow the vehicle and charging-equipment instructions. No rain shield is recommended in this guide.

Is an extra MG4 dust cap worth buying in Australia?

Our buying recommendation is to base the decision on what you actually see. Parking near the coast or on a dusty driveway is context, not proof that the inlet needs another cover.

The following table is a practical decision aid, not a measured contamination study. We have no comparative MG4 test showing that this accessory prevents failures or pays for itself in repair savings.

Buy, wait or repair: choose the response that matches the problem
Your situation First action Purchase decision
Garage parking; inlet stays clean Keep the original covers working. Low priority. No clear extra need has been identified.
Outdoor parking near trees or loose dust Observe where debris collects with the flap normally closed. Consider a matched cap if it addresses that specific exposure.
Coastal parking Assess actual condition rather than assuming salt damage. Optional; do not buy on an unsupported corrosion-prevention promise.
Cable carried loose in the boot Organise the cable and protect its connector. A cable storage solution addresses this need more directly.
Original cap, flap or latch damaged Identify the correct repair or replacement. Repair first. An extra AC cap is not a flap or latch repair.
Wet contacts, contamination or charging faults Obtain assistance through the appropriate service route. Do not buy a cap as a substitute for diagnosis.

    Consider buying when

    • You can name the between-session protection need.
    • The selected cap matches the inlet and available space.
    • It seats securely without forcing the outer flap.
    • The extra removal and refitting step suits your routine.

Wait or choose another route when

    • The existing arrangement already meets your needs.
    • You actually need cable storage or an original repair part.
    • Compatibility or flap clearance is uncertain.
    • You expect guaranteed waterproofing or fault prevention.

Daily convenience is part of value. A removable accessory adds something to keep clean, store and refit. If you are unlikely to use it consistently, a purchase justified only by reassurance may not be worthwhile.

A useful question is: “What problem will this cap solve on my car?” If the answer is only that the socket looks unfinished, verify the factory arrangement first.

MG4 AC inlet cover charge flap closes

Which EVparts4x4 product should you consider?

For a matching upper Type 2 AC inlet, check the option labelled Universal EU Standard Port Cover (CCS2 / Type 2). The product page also offers other interfaces, so the cheapest default option is not the correct comparison for every car.

Optional Type 2 AC inlet cover

EVparts4x4 lists this option as flexible TPR with an adhesive-free push-fit. On CCS2 it covers the upper AC area only; a lower DC cover is not included.

View the selected Type 2 option and current price

Check the inlet and surrounding clearance before ordering. The interface label is not blanket approval for every MG4 year or the Urban.

Those are supplier specifications, not an independent ingress-protection test or MG endorsement. We do not assign the accessory an IP rating, a service life or a quantified reduction in water damage.

Compare the total delivered cost in the currency selected for your location. Include delivery and any applicable charges shown at checkout. An unrelated brake, window or body accessory does not help you evaluate a charging-inlet cap.

The GB/T option is a separate interface choice, even though its label includes MG4. Do not select it for a Type 2 inlet. Detailed interface and clearance checks belong in the fitment guide linked above.

What should you check before placing an order?

    1. Identify the actual need. State whether you want an extra inlet cap, a cable-end cap or an original replacement part.
    2. Identify the vehicle. Record the build year, delivery market and whether it is an MG4 EV or MG4 EV Urban.
    3. Provide a clear photo. Show the inlet, existing covers and outer flap. Keep measuring tools away from electrical contacts.
    4. Resolve the physical match. Ask about the selected option, seating and flap clearance before buying if any point remains unclear.
    5. Check after-sales terms. Read the applicable returns policy and get clarification before fitting or altering a part.

For a fitment enquiry, send us the vehicle details and inlet photo. A useful answer identifies the exact option and its limitations, rather than simply repeating the model name.

Keep the intended use clear. This inlet cap comes off before charging. It cannot repair a broken flap, cure a charging fault or establish that wet equipment is safe to use.

For normal care, MG’s handbook advises keeping charging equipment clean and dry, removing excess water before connection, and avoiding pressure-washer jets directed at high-voltage charging points. Follow the instructions for your own vehicle rather than treating an accessory as permission to change them.

MG Australia’s current warranty policy excludes non-genuine accessories and faults resulting from their use. Check the policy applicable to your car; a removable fitting method alone is not evidence that MG has approved a cap.

For other vehicle-specific purchases, browse our MG4 parts and accessories. If your separate question concerns charge duration, see our MG4 charging-time article; an inlet cap is not a charging-speed upgrade.

MG4 Type 2 dust cap: common questions

Does an MG4 need an extra Type 2 dust cap?

Treat it as an optional accessory. First check the factory covers fitted to your car. Consider an extra AC inlet cap only for a clear between-session protection need, with confirmed fit and normal outer-door closure. Repair missing or damaged original equipment through the correct parts route.

Is an uncovered upper AC socket proof that a factory cap is missing?

No. The handbook distinguishes the Type 2 AC area from the lower DC section and its cover. Compare your exact vehicle with its own handbook or ask MG before treating the upper socket as incomplete.

Is a dust cap worth buying for a garage-kept MG4?

Usually it is a low-priority purchase if the factory covers work and the inlet stays clean. Check the actual condition rather than buying solely because a listing calls a cap essential. An extra accessory should solve a visible need.

Will an upper Type 2 cap protect the lower CCS2 DC contacts?

The selected EVparts4x4 Type 2 accessory covers the upper AC section only. A separate lower DC cover is not included. Keep the appropriate factory DC cover in service; do not assume one upper cap protects the whole combined inlet.

Can I use this cap as a rain cover while charging?

No. This is a removable inlet cap for use between sessions and must be removed before connecting a charging plug. It is not a connected-cable rain shield. It does not repair wet, damaged or contaminated charging equipment.

Is a Type 2 cable-end cap the same as a vehicle inlet cap?

No. One protects a disconnected cable connector during storage; the other fits the socket on the car. Choose a part designed for the intended location. The product recommended here is an AC vehicle inlet cover, not a cable-end storage cap.

Can I order the same cap for an MG4 EV Urban?

Confirm the Urban separately. MG Australia publishes a separate Urban handbook and lists a CCS Type 2 connection in its brochure. That interface description does not confirm an accessory’s dimensions, seating or outer-door clearance on every Urban.

Is an aftermarket cap covered by my MG warranty?

MG Australia’s current policy excludes non-genuine accessories and faults resulting from their use. Check the policy applicable to your vehicle and ask MG about a specific concern. A push-fit design alone is not evidence of MG approval or warranty coverage.
