Technical guide reviewed · Australian trailer connectors
Connected the caravan or boat trailer and spotted a trailer light malfunction message? Start with the lights themselves. A warning with working LEDs needs a different check from a trailer with a dead indicator, dim stop lamps or flickering tail lights.
This guide covers checks you can make while parked and the information an auto electrician needs. The pin table applies to Australian 7-pin flat connectors; do not transfer it to European 13-pin or North American sockets.
What should you check before buying a fix?
- Apply the parking brake and secure the trailer against movement.
- Ask a helper to check left and right indicators, tail lights, stop lamps and any fitted reversing lamps.
- Record the exact dashboard message and the lighting function being used when it appears.
- Note whether the fault started after new LED lamps, a plug replacement or a harness installation.
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| One lamp does not work | Lamp, connector and that circuit’s wiring | Repair the failed function before considering an anti-error device |
| Several lamps dim or flash together | Shared earth, plug contacts and damaged connections | Have the connections tested under load |
| All lamps work; warning started after LEDs | Lamp load and compatibility with the installed tow module | Use a controlled comparison and circuit diagnosis |
| Warning with several known-good trailers | Vehicle socket, harness, module and stored faults | Arrange a vehicle-side diagnosis |
Why can LED trailer lights trigger a warning?
LED lamps can draw less current than incandescent globes. Where a vehicle or tow module checks lamp load, that difference can affect how it recognises the trailer lights.
That is a possible explanation, not a diagnosis of every Tank 500 warning. The monitoring behaviour depends on the vehicle version, installed harness and module; this guide does not establish a GWM-approved current threshold or a universal resistor value.
A poor earth or intermittent connector can produce a similar symptom. Even if every lamp looks bright at one moment, inspect the wiring before deciding the warning is only an LED compatibility issue.
How do you narrow down the fault?
1. Inspect the plug and socket with the trailer disconnected
Switch off the lighting functions and disconnect the plug before inspecting it. Look for bent or recessed contacts, corrosion, cracked housings, loose cable entry and wiring that has rubbed against the drawbar.
Use only a cleaner or protective treatment suitable for the connector, following its instructions. Allow cleaner to dry before reconnecting; damaged or badly corroded contacts need repair or replacement rather than another layer of grease.
2. Check the earth and connections under load
The earth return is a useful check when several lamps behave oddly together. A continuity beep alone does not show whether a connection can carry the required load.
An auto electrician can check voltage drop with the lamps operating and inspect the return path. Do not assume that pin 3 always corrodes first or that the trailer coupling provides an adequate substitute for the earth wire.
3. Compare with a known-good trailer while parked
A known-good trailer can help separate a vehicle-side problem from a fault on your trailer. Use a compatible plug, check the same lighting functions and keep both combinations stationary for the comparison.
If an incandescent-globe trailer works without a warning, LED compatibility becomes a stronger lead. It still does not rule out every wiring fault: the trailers also differ in connections, circuit loads and equipment.
4. Have the affected circuit tested properly
For electrical testing, use the vehicle and harness instructions and the correct pin numbers. Avoid bridging adjacent contacts or probing vehicle data wiring.
Some electronic outputs may use pulses or require a recognised load. A single multimeter reading, including zero volts, is not enough to declare the module faulty; diagnosis may require testing under load and reading the relevant stored faults.
What is the correct Australian 7-pin flat wiring?
Use the numbers moulded into the connector. A view of the socket can be the mirror image of the plug, so matching a wire by its apparent position is unreliable.
| Pin | Circuit | Standard colour |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Left-hand indicator | Yellow |
| 2 | Reversing signal | Black |
| 3 | Earth return | White |
| 4 | Right-hand indicator | Green |
| 5 | Service brakes, where fitted | Blue |
| 6 | Stop lamps | Red |
| 7 | Tail, clearance and side-marker lamps | Brown |

Will load resistors fix the warning?
A correctly specified resistor can add load to a lamp circuit. It cannot repair corrosion, a broken wire or a poor earth, and it is not a universal fix for every Tank 500 tow module.
The resistance, affected circuits, output limits and installation method need to suit the actual system. Ask the technician or harness supplier to specify the solution; do not assume that two 6 ohm resistors are the right answer.
| Illustrative voltage across 6 ohms | Calculated current | Calculated heat dissipation |
|---|---|---|
| 12 V | 2 A | 24 W |
| 14.4 V | 2.4 A | 34.6 W |
These examples use current = voltage ÷ resistance and power = voltage² ÷ resistance. They are not a Tank 500 resistor recommendation or a prediction of your socket voltage.
A specified load resistor
- May address a confirmed lamp-load mismatch.
- Adds electrical load and heat to the circuit.
- Needs suitable resistance, output capacity and mounting.
A compatible harness or interface
- May provide the required trailer-light interface.
- Needs confirmed support for the vehicle and existing equipment.
- An anti-error label alone does not prove compatibility.
Which trailer wiring harness should you choose?
Start with what is already installed. Confirm whether the vehicle has an original or aftermarket tow module, which connectors it uses and whether the supplier supports your trailer’s LED lamps.
Ask whether an interface retains useful lamp-failure detection and works alongside the existing brake controller. A harness for a different GWM model should not be assumed to fit the Tank 500.
Check fitment before ordering
Vehicle-Specific Trailer Wiring Harness Kit with Anti-Error CAN Module
The public listing offers a vehicle-specific enquiry option, but does not explicitly list a Tank 500 variant. Send your year, powertrain, market and connector photos for written fitment confirmation before purchase.
Ask us to confirm Tank 500 compatibilityThe product is a fitment enquiry candidate, not a confirmed cure for this warning. Browse our Tank 500 parts collection for model-related accessories; assess each part against your vehicle before ordering.
Do all Tank 500 versions have the same towing limits?
No. Keep towing capacity separate from lamp diagnosis, and match the figures to the Australian version you own.
| Version and source | Braked towing | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| HEV/PHEV variants in the March 2026 Australian brochure | 3,000 kg | Vehicle variant and fitted towing equipment |
| New 3.0-litre diesel, GWM announcement, August 2026 | 3,500 kg | Exact diesel vehicle specification and rated equipment |
The lower applicable vehicle, towbar, coupling and trailer limits still matter, along with GVM, GCM and axle loads. Check the permitted towball download for your vehicle and towbar; do not assume a universal 300 kg limit.
Tank 500 trailer light warning: frequently asked questions
Why does my Tank 500 show a trailer light malfunction warning with LED lights?
Low-current LED lamps can be incompatible with some lamp-monitoring systems. Corrosion, a poor earth, damaged wiring or a faulty module can also trigger a warning. Check every lighting function and have the affected circuit tested before treating the message as a false alarm.
Why does the warning appear when all the trailer lights work?
A lamp may work visibly while its electrical load or intermittent connection still fails a monitoring check. Record when the message appears and check each function separately. An auto electrician can compare the LED trailer with a known-good load; visible light output alone does not confirm the cause.
Which pins are the indicators on an Australian 7-pin flat plug?
Pin 1 is the left-hand indicator and pin 4 is the right-hand indicator. Pin 2 is the reversing signal, not the right-hand indicator. Use the moulded pin numbers and the connector diagram; the plug and socket views can look reversed.
Is pin 5 for brake lights or electric trailer brakes?
Pin 5 is for service brakes where fitted; pin 6 is for the stop lamps. A lamp warning and an electric-brake fault need different checks. Do not connect a lamp load resistor to pin 5 or repurpose that circuit for auxiliary power.
Will a 50 W, 6 ohm resistor fix every Tank 500 LED trailer warning?
A 50 W, 6 ohm resistor is not a verified universal solution for every Tank 500 and trailer combination. A resistor adds current and heat, so its value, circuit loading and mounting must be specified for the actual system. Repair connection and wiring faults first.
Should I buy a CANbus trailer adaptor or replace the wiring harness?
First identify the existing vehicle harness, tow module and trailer plug. Ask the supplier to confirm support for your Tank 500 year, powertrain, market and LED lamps. A generic anti-error label does not establish fitment, fault-detection behaviour or a guaranteed cure.
Does the EVparts4x4 vehicle-specific harness definitely fit my Tank 500?
Fitment is not confirmed by the public product options. The listing has a vehicle-specific enquiry option, so send your year, powertrain, market and connector photos before ordering. Ask for written confirmation of compatibility with your existing towing equipment and LED trailer lamps.
Can I tow while the trailer light warning is on?
Do not set off with a required trailer lamp or braking function that is not working. If all lamps appear normal but the warning persists, have the cause assessed before towing. Transport for NSW includes working lights and brakes in its pre-trip checks.
Will changing trailer wiring affect my warranty?
Check the GWM warranty terms and get the proposed work documented before modifying the wiring. Australian Consumer Law guarantees are separate from manufacturer warranties, but that does not guarantee coverage for damage caused by a modification. Keep invoices, fitment instructions and diagnostic records.
Can every Australian Tank 500 tow 3,000 kg?
No single figure covers every version. The March 2026 Australian HEV/PHEV brochure lists 3,000 kg braked towing; GWM announced 3,500 kg for the new 3.0-litre diesel. Confirm your vehicle, towbar, coupling, mass limits and ball-load limit before towing.
For the distinction between statutory guarantees and manufacturer warranties, see the ACCC’s car consumer-rights information. Discuss the proposed wiring work with your installer and warranty provider before changing the vehicle.
