Installation Steps

1.Preparation

  • Gather Tools: You'll need a flat - head screwdriver, a Phillips - head screwdriver (if applicable), and potentially a small pair of pliers.
  • Get the Right Handle: Ensure the modified gear lever handle is compatible with your specific Kia model (Optima, Forte, Soul, or Sorento).
  • Safety First: Park your vehicle on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

2. Remove the Old Gear Lever Handle

  • Remove the Boot:
    • Locate the gear shift boot. In many cases, you can gently pry up the edges of the boot using a flat - head screwdriver. Start from the front or the side where it's easiest to access.
    • Once the boot is loose, carefully pull it upwards to expose the base of the gear lever.
  • Detach the Handle:
    • Check for a retaining screw or clip at the base of the gear lever. If there's a screw, use the appropriate screwdriver to remove it.
    • If it's a clip, you may need to use pliers to gently squeeze and release the clip.
    • After removing the retaining mechanism, firmly grasp the old gear lever handle and pull it straight up. It might require a bit of force, but be careful not to damage the surrounding components.

3. Prepare the New Gear Lever Handle

  • Inspect the Handle: Check the new handle for any defects or damage. Ensure that all parts, such as buttons or decorative elements, are intact.
  • Understand the Installation: Some modified handles may have additional features or a specific way of attaching. Refer to the instructions provided with the new handle.

4. Install the New Gear Lever Handle

  • Align the Handle:
    • Place the new gear lever handle over the gear lever shaft. Make sure it is properly aligned. If the handle has a specific orientation (e.g., for a particular button layout), ensure it is facing the correct direction.
  • Attach the Handle:
    • If there was a screw on the old handle, insert and tighten the screw to secure the new handle. Use the appropriate torque to avoid over - tightening or stripping the threads.
    • If it's a clip - on handle, press the handle firmly onto the shaft until the clip engages. You should hear or feel a click indicating a secure connection.

5. Re - install the Gear Shift Boot

  • Position the Boot: Place the gear shift boot back over the base of the gear lever.
  • Secure the Boot: Press the edges of the boot back into their original position. Make sure it fits snugly and covers the area around the gear lever neatly.

6. Test the Gear Lever

  • Start the Vehicle: Turn on the engine and shift through the gears. Ensure that the new handle moves smoothly and that all gear positions are easily accessible.
  • Check for Proper Function: Verify that the gear indicator on the dashboard accurately reflects the selected gear.

Adds a Sporty Touch

This modified gear lever handle has completely changed the look of my Kia Soul's interior. It gives the car a much sportier and modern feel. The material feels durable, and the grip is very comfortable. It's a perfect fit and doesn't rattle or move at all. I couldn't be happier with this small but impactful modification.
