Installation Steps

1. Prepare the Vehicle

  • Park on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts and lift the vehicle with a jack. Secure it with jack stands.

2. Drain Brake Fluid

  • Remove the master cylinder reservoir cap. Use a syringe to drain fluid from the reservoir.
  • Caution: Brake fluid damages paint. Wipe spills immediately with water.

3. Disconnect Components

  • Forte/Soul:
    • Remove the battery and battery tray (if necessary).
    • Detach the brake fluid level sensor connector.
  • Rio:
    • Remove the air cleaner assembly to access the master cylinder.

4. Remove the Old Master Cylinder

  • All Models:
    • Loosen and disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder using line wrenches. Plug the lines to prevent fluid loss.
    • Remove the mounting nuts (10mm or 12mm) securing the master cylinder to the brake booster.
    • Pull the master cylinder away from the booster.

5. Install the New Master Cylinder

  • Forte/Soul:
    • Align the new master cylinder with the booster. Tighten mounting nuts to 9.8–15.7 N·m (7.2–11.6 lb-ft).
  • Rio:
    • Ensure proper alignment and torque mounting nuts to 12.7–16.7 N·m (9.4–12.3 lb-ft).
  • All Models:
    • Reconnect the brake lines and tighten to 13.7–22.6 N·m (10.1–16.6 lb-ft) (verify specs for ABS/ESC systems).
    • Attach the brake fluid level sensor connector.

6. Bleed the Brake System

  • Fill the reservoir with fresh brake fluid.
  • Bleed air from the brake lines in the order specified by the manufacturer (typically RR → LR → RF → LF).
  • Have an assistant pump the brake pedal while you open the bleeder screw, repeating until fluid flows clear.

7. Test and Adjust

  • Start the engine and check for fluid leaks at the master cylinder and lines.
  • Pump the brake pedal to build pressure. Ensure no sponginess or excessive travel.
  • Test drive the vehicle to verify proper braking performance.
