Installation Steps

 1: Prepare the Vehicle

  1. Park and Secure:
    • Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface and engage the parking brake (if possible).
    • Use wheel wedges to secure the front wheels.
  2. Disconnect Battery (Optional):
    • If working near electrical components, disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental engagement.

 2: Access the Handbrake Cable

  1. Lift the Vehicle:
    • Use a jack to lift the rear of the vehicle and secure it with stands. Ensure the wheels are off the ground.
  2. Remove Rear Wheels:
    • Unscrew the lug nuts and remove both rear wheels for access to the brake calipers.

3: Remove the Old Handbrake Cable

  1. Locate the Cable Ends:
    • The handbrake cable connects to the handbrake lever inside the vehicle and the rear brake calipers.
  2. Disconnect from Brake Calipers:
    • On each rear caliper, use pliers to release the cable from the brake lever arm.
    • If stuck, apply penetrating oil and gently wiggle the cable free.
  3. Disconnect from Handbrake Lever:
    • Inside the vehicle, remove the center console or trim panel to access the handbrake lever.
    • Unscrew the nut securing the cable to the lever and detach the cable.
  4. Remove the Old Cable:
    • Trace the cable from the lever to the calipers, unclipping it from brackets along the chassis.
    • Pull the old cable out from under the vehicle.

4: Install the New Handbrake Cable

  1. Route the New Cable:
    • Feed the new cable through the same path as the old one, ensuring it lies flat and avoids sharp bends.
    • Secure it to the chassis brackets with clips or ties.
  2. Connect to Brake Calipers:
    • Attach the cable ends to the rear brake caliper lever arms. Ensure the cable is seated properly.
  3. Connect to Handbrake Lever:
    • Inside the vehicle, secure the cable to the handbrake lever with the provided nut. Do not fully tighten yet.

 5: Adjust the Handbrake Tension

  1. Test Engagement:
    • With the vehicle still on stands, slowly pull the handbrake lever and check if both rear wheels lock.
    • If one wheel locks before the other, adjust the cable tension using the adjuster nut near the handbrake lever.
  2. Final Adjustment:
    • Tighten the adjuster nut until the handbrake engages smoothly with 4–6 clicks of travel.
    • Ensure both rear wheels rotate freely when the handbrake is fully released.

 6: Reassemble and Test

  1. Replace Wheels:
    • Install the rear wheels and tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to the manufacturer’s torque specs (typically 80–100 ft-lbs).
  2. Lower the Vehicle:
    • Remove the stands and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  3. Test Drive:
    • Test the handbrake on a slight incline to ensure it holds the vehicle securely.
