Yangwang U8 technology: EREV, tank turns and flotation

Yangwang is BYD’s luxury brand. The U8 is a range-extended electric SUV: its electric motors drive the wheels, with a petrol range extender supporting longer journeys. It is not a battery-only SUV, so charging needs and fuel use both matter.

BYD’s 2023 U8 Premium Edition announcement describes the e⁴ four-motor drive system and DiSus-P hydraulic body control. It also lists tank turns and emergency flotation. These are manufacturer descriptions, rather than an independent road test by EVparts4x4.

Do not assume every viral BYD manoeuvre belongs to the U8. BYD’s technology explainer assigns diagonal movement to the DENZA Z9GT’s e³ platform and emergency flotation to the U8.

Yangwang U8 price in Europe and the UK

The verified historical price is ¥1,098,000 for the U8 Premium Edition at its September 2023 China launch. That figure is not a current 2026 China quote, a U8L price, or an official European price. See BYD’s original price announcement.

Why a currency conversion is not the UK price

Converting yuan into pounds or euros changes the currency, not the sales route. Freight, insurance, duties, VAT, approval work, registration and the seller’s margin can all affect an import quote. Request an itemised total for the destination where you will register the vehicle.

EU duties and UK taxes are separate

The European Commission’s published countervailing-duty measure includes vehicles driven solely by electric motors with an internal-combustion range extender. Calling the U8 an EREV does not automatically exclude it. The published BYD rate is 17.0%; the applicable treatment depends on the measure’s scope and exporter documentation.

Do not apply that EU measure as a UK tax rate. GOV.UK’s vehicle-import guidance explains that VAT and customs duty depend on the circumstances; VAT can include delivery charges and customs duty. Ask the customs agent for the current treatment of the actual vehicle and destination.

UK release date and European availability

Autocar has reported a 2027 UK launch for Yangwang. Treat this as a reported brand-launch plan, not a confirmed U8 order opening, right-hand-drive specification or delivery appointment. Access to the full report may require a subscription.

For a UK buyer, a meaningful release date needs a named model, local specification, ordering process and delivery terms. The current BYD UK model catalogue reviewed for this guide did not provide a U8 retail listing. A motor-show appearance is not the same as an on-sale announcement.

For an import into Great Britain, GOV.UK explains vehicle approval and the potential Individual Vehicle Approval route for vehicles not registered in the EU. Do not confuse an approval process with a guaranteed pass, or assume a Euro NCAP rating is a registration certificate.

Range, ownership and U8 vs U8L

Combined range is not electric-only range

BYD quoted up to 1,000km combined CLTC range for the 2023 Premium Edition. It includes the range-extender system; it is not 1,000km of battery-only driving. We have not verified a UK or European U8 WLTP figure, so this guide does not convert CLTC into a guessed WLTP number.

When assessing an imported vehicle, request the exact charging connector, AC and DC compatibility, battery specification and relevant test data. Check whether navigation, apps, connected services and software updates work in your country. Equipment from another model year is not a substitute for that information.

U8 and U8L are different versions

The U8L is the longer model. BYD introduced a six-seat, three-row U8L in 2025 and announced a four-seat U8L Dingzang Edition in 2026. A search for “Yangwang U8L price UK” therefore needs its own edition and market check; do not reuse the original U8’s launch price.

Ownership costs to check before committing

• Insurance: obtain a quote for the exact imported vehicle and intended registration.
• Servicing: identify who can diagnose, repair and source parts for that edition.
